      I, Jesse B Badgett, do hereby certify that I was well acquainted with Nathaniel Dennis, formerly of the State of Arkansas – that said Dennis went to Texas in the year 1835, and joined the army of that country – that he was attached to what was known as Grant & Johnson’s company, and was killed at the crossing of the Nueces in the month of January 1836, while engaged in the service of Texas as a private in said company.
      The undersigned saw the said Nathaniel Dennis enlist and knows the facts of his service and death in the Texas Army.
      The subscriber was in Texas at the time and was a member of the Convention that formed the constitution of that country.

      I, David B Greer, Secretary of State of the State of Arkansas, do hereby certify that Archibald Smith before whom the above affidavit was made was at the date thereof, a Justice of the Peace, in and for the County of Pulaski, in said state, duly commissioned according to law and, that as such, all his official acts are entitled to full faith and credit.
      In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand, and affixed the seal of my office, at Little Rock, on the 8th day of May, A.D. 1844

      The heirs of Nathaniel Dennis dec’d pray the Hon. Legislature of the State of Texas to grant to them a certificate for one third of a League of land as the head right of said dec’d who fell with Grant and Johnson in the Spring of 1836
