- Jesse enlisted in the 14th Ky Cavalry, company B, on 16 Aug 1862 at Mt. Sterling, KY, and was discharged on 16 Sep 1863 at Maysville, KY. He served as a private. He enlisted in the 53rd Regiment of the Kentucky Volunteer Infantry, company G, on 12 Sep 1864 and was discharged on 15 Sep 1865 at Louisville, KY. He served as a 1st Lt.
His military service records indicate that he was wounded several times. On or near Havards Mills, near Mt, Sterling, KY, on or about Aug 1863 he received a gun shot wound through the right thigh. On or about Dec 1864 near King's Salt works, VA, fracture of two ribs causing an enlargement of the spleen. At or near Olympian Springs, KY, spring of 1865, incurred saber cut across frontal bone over right eye cutting through the bone. Resulted in impaired vision, anaesthesis of the head and shoulder, neuralgia and loss of teeth. Also a saber cut below the right knee cap.
